The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo is offering a two-part series of classes titled “Secrets of the Soil’ with ecologist, horticulturist and land planner Zach Mermel.
The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo is offering a two-part series of classes titled “Secrets of the Soil’ with ecologist, horticulturist and land planner Zach Mermel.
Both sessions will take place in UH-Hilo’s College of Agriculture Building, Room 102. The cost is $35 per class, or $60 for both.
• Part 1: Soil Biology Basics, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. This interactive session will explore the dynamics of the soil food web, various properties of the soil and the fundamentals of soil testing at the homestead and farm scale.
• Part 2: How to Make High Quality Compost, 9 a.m.-noon Feb. 25. This hands-on session will involve constructing a biologically active compost pile and will include strategies to dramatically enhance the life-giving properties of the soil.
